Make Your Apple Pie Healthier With These Tricks!

Thanksgiving is close, and if you’re like us – you’ll be eating A LOT. There are some simple tricks you can use to try and keep the calorie count at bay. If you’re the one in charge of bringing pie, keep these in tricks in mind and help not only yourself but everyone else cut some calories where possible.

Make A Lattice Pie Crust

A lattice pie crust, because it’s woven and not a full crust, reduces the number of calories you will be eating! It’s basic math really, less crust, fewer calories.

Use A Crumble Topping

A lattice pie crust can be complex, so you could always try a crumble topping! Not only is it less to worry about, but it can be more nutritious depending on how you make it. It’s not only a bit easier to prepare, but it is so delicious! No one will even wonder why it’s a crumble instead of a crust – promise.

Use Less Sugar

Apples are naturally very sweet, so it won’t be hard using less sugar and getting away with it at the same time. It doesn’t have to be big changes, if a recipe calls for 1-cup of sugar, use 3/4 of a cup instead! Easy! That can add up to about 1.5 tablespoons per serving. It’s definitely something!

Use Spices

Cinnamon and ginger are traditional spices to put inside of an apple pie! Use them to help combat the less sweet taste (because of less sugar used). They also have many health benefits which are always an added bonus when you’re baking!

Stay Old Fashioned

Keep some of the apples unpeeled before you put them in your pie! You’ll get a lot more fiber from the pie this way. On top of the added nutrients, you also get a bit of a different flavor in the pie! In a good way of course.
