In today’s busy world many people don’t have the time to train for an hour on a daily basis. That’s why to achieve the best possible results in a short amount of time you need to be efficient.
To be efficient you must expend the most amount of energy in the shortest amount of time possible. Sounds good, so let’s take a look at exercises, which burn the most amount of calories per hour.

NOTE: All figures are approximate and are based on a 200 lb (90 kg) person.
Keep in mind that the more the person weighs, the higher the amount of energy is required to perform these exercises.
- Running @ 14 mph (22 km/h) – burns approximately 2100 calories.
- Bicycling @ 20 mph (32 km/h) – burns approximately 1450 calories.
- Running on stairs – burns approximately 1350 calories.
- Running @ 10 mph (16 km/h) – burns approximately 1300 calories.
- Swimming – burns approximately 1250 calories.
This looks great, you can burn so many calories just by exercising for an hour a day. Or you don’t even have to do these exercises for an hour, you can do half an hour and get ripped, right? WRONG!
If you take a closer look, you’ll realize that these exercises are for professional athletes, who, probably, expend so much energy during training, or competing. Hence, the word ‘professional’.
However, for the 99 percent of normal people performing all of these exercises are extremely unrealistic. Trying to perform these exercises will bring only lead to two things – disappointment and injury. Period.
Personally, I am not built for running at all. A few years ago, I used to go to the gym, where I ran for 10 minutes as a warm up. Every single minute was a chore to me, every time.
Meanwhile, my friend could run for an hour, without any breaks. At a pace, which would definitely give me a heart attack.
Eventually, I stopped running and decided to do a stretching routine instead, which made the gym experience so much better. Also, it kept me from injuries, which is always a positive thing. So the lesson is:
ADVICE: Don’t force your body to do things it is not built to do, or you will have a bad time.
The Best Exercise for You is…
Now that we established that the best exercise for weight loss is not necessarily the one, which burns the most calories.
You need to find an exercise (or a complete workout), which will not feel like a chore for you. Which will feel like you’re on adventure and are actually having fun. I know it’s hard to believe that such exercises exist, until you actually find one. This is the ultimate secret in succeeding on your weight loss journey.
You are more likely to stick to an activity, if it brings some kind of joy, or gratification. After a few weeks, it will be so engraved in your daily routine, that your day will not feel complete, without completing this activity.

Personally, my favorite exercise is bicycling. Unfortunately, I live in a country, where I can only use the bicycle for 4-5 months. So during the cold periods I stick to bodyweight exercises, which I will cover in a separate post.
What I want you to do is to try and experiment with various exercises. I don’t care if it looks weird, if it looks weak, or if you think it’s too much work. Try 10 different things, eliminate the ones you don’t like and try another 10. Combine exercises you enjoy and do them 3-4 times a week.
